Agreed! It's important for newspapers to realize that not only does Web innovation mean bringing something new in terms of content to their sites, but it also means exploring the idea of presenting that content in ways different from the norm. Thanks for your comments!

I'm glad you spoke to KnoxNews about the redesign. I was very interested in their changes. Personally, I like the black, but am not really into the large purple nav and the rather large news sections underneath with huge headlines. Thep age is just a little too long, I don't care enough to scroll that much.

But I'm glad they went bold with a reverse design. A news site doesn't always have to look like a newspaper.

I would also suggest that if you look at other aspects of innovation, you would still see the Knoxville News Sentinel with a high ranking. The KNS was actively encouraging the blogging community to be participants in the paper's online community when many other newspapers were either ignoring the trend toward to blogging or treating the medium as a horde of barbarians at the gate. The KNS has a staff that understands the web site is more than a digital copy of the paper. They have integrated blogs, video, and social media into their approach to tell the news and serve the community.

We trust our readers can understand that the higher a newspaper's score, the more innovative that newspaper is compared to newspapers with lower scores. For instance, Wade, since the The Miami Herald scored a 17 and that's higher than the Lexington Herald-Leader's score of 12, that means we consider The Miami Herald more innovative than the Lexington Herald-Leader. This was not an attempt to rank the most innovative newspaper Web sites, though. The blog post clearly states, "Each week, Scooping the News will select five U.S. daily newspapers' Web sites and evaluate how well they are performing in five areas used to define innovation. . . . Each newspaper received a score ranging from 1 to 4 based on changes in their Web sites from five years ago to present."

We are simply evaluating how innovative these newspapers have been with their Web sites during the last five years. Perhaps we will evaluate some of the newspaper Web sites you suggested next Monday. They actually look quite different from the Knoxville News Sentinel. Thanks again for the links and thanks for reading!
