Editor's Note: Every week, we highlight what we consider the top five new journalism professor job openings posted during the week across the United States. Several news reports have documented the increase in the number of U.S. college students majoring in journalism this year, and there are plenty of professor openings announced every week at journalism schools.
1. The Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Fla., seeks an assistant professor in multiplatform journalism. The job listing states, "Candidates would be expected to teach and develop courses in this specialization, and contribute to teaching scientific and technical communication to non-communication majors. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Journalism or Mass Communication. Advanced ABD's will be considered."
2. The University of Utah seeks an assistant professor of new media (tenure-track position). The job listing states, "Specifically, strong candidates will have teaching and research expertise at the intersection of new media and one or more of the following areas: strategic communication, convergence journalism, environmental communication, health communication, and/or organizational communication."
3. The University of North Florida in Jacksonville seeks an assistant professor in electronic media. The job listing states, "Teach and develop courses in electronic journalism (news and sports) for traditional and online/interactive/mobile media dissemination to audiences. The successful applicant will also have the expertise needed to teach courses in at least two of the following areas: video/multimedia production, media law and ethics, and electronic media programming and management, mass communications research, media theories and effects."
4. The University of Texas at Tyler seeks an assistant professor in journalism (tenure-track position). The job listing states, "The successful candidate will be qualified to teach courses in the news editorial sequence as assigned. Experience in the writing field and in other mass media industries such as broadcasting, new media technologies or photography a plus. The candidate should demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain a record of research, teach undergraduate and graduate courses, and advise students."
5. Lehman College of the City University of New York seeks an associate professor in new media (tenure-track position). The job listing states, "The successful candidate will teach multimedia journalism (reporting, writing, and producing across media platforms); will demonstrate experience at the cutting edge of interdisciplinary developments in the field of new media and multimedia studies; and will coach students in the use of print and electronic software that will alow them to merge communication fields to convey effective messages."
