Editor's Note: Every week, we highlight what we consider the top five new journalism professor job openings posted during the week across the United States. Several news reports have documented the increase in the number of U.S. college students majoring in journalism this year, and there are plenty of professor openings announced every week at journalism schools.
1. Butler University in Indiana seeks an assistant professor in journalism (tenure-track position). The job listing states, "The successful candidate should have competencies in one or more of the following areas: converged journalism, visual communication, media management and data-based and investigative reporting. The candidate will teach some combination of the following courses: introduction to mass communication, mass media ethics, media management, computer-assisted writing and reporting, photojournalism, multimedia editing and design, public affairs reporting, substantive courses in news editorial and special topics courses such as science and environmental reporting, business and economics reporting, magazine writing and design, information graphics. The candidate will advise the student media. A Ph.D. is required."
2. James Madison University in Virginia seeks an assistant professor in converged media (tenure-track position). The job listing states, "We seek a student-oriented colleague with a strong professional background in Web and interactive production who is committed to producing compelling stories in a converged-media environment. This position will contribute to all levels of our Converged Media curriculum including at least one of our foundation areas (Web, print design, video, and audio production). The ability to teach professional software, including Adobe Creative Suite 4 is required."
3. Western Carolina University seeks an assistant professor in journalism (tenure-track position). The job listing states, "Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate courses in writing for the media using new technologies, development of a Web-based news product, advising students, supervising student internships, engaging in scholarship, and serving on committees. Qualifications: Desired qualifications include a Ph.D. degree in communication or journalism or ABD within a year of hire and 3 years' professional communication/journalism experience."
4. Bradley University in Illinois seeks an assistant professor in journalism (tenure-track position). The job listing states, "The Department of Communication seeks a dynamic and creative professor to join a highly productive team of interdisciplinary colleagues to develop a world-class program in journalism. The ideal candidate will embrace a global perspective, cultural diversity, and an understanding of the new digital age of convergence journalism. The ideal candidate will be one that reaches across academic disciplines and institutions to collaborate with colleagues in other departments, universities, and corporate entities."
5. West Texas A&M University seeks an assistant professor in broadcast journalism (tenure-track position). The job listing states, "The successful candidate should have an established record of teaching at the undergraduate level, expertise in teaching a variety of communication courses such as introduction to mass communication, news reporting and editing, media writing, media history, and multi-platform publishing; the ability to conduct disciplinary research, advise student publications, advise and recruit undergraduate students, serve as a member of Master’s thesis committees, engage in university committee assignments, implement new media strategies in course development, particularly that of media convergence, and assist with the evaluation of student learning."
