Here are the five U.S. newspaper job openings we decided to highlight this week:
1. The Las Vegas Review-Journal seeks news reporters. The job listing states, "The Las Vegas Review-Journal, Nevada’s largest daily, anticipates hiring experienced news reporters and strong writers for the political and court beats. The political beat requires covering campaigns and elections for state and federal office, assisting in coverage of the Legislature and Congress, and writing on news, issues and trends. The court position requires writing on news, issues and trends in the state court system, with an emphasis on criminal cases."
2. The Roanoke Times in Virginia seeks an interactive designer. The job listing states, "The Roanoke Times is looking for a creative, curious, agile and innovative web designer to help us tell stories and improve our users’ experience on roanoke.com. We are looking for someone who is comfortable with both interaction/development and visual design to work on roanoke.com, an award-winning site with an established reputation for its multimedia storytelling and innovative environment. You'll take the lead in developing new ways to engage our audience and lead them through our stories online"
3. The Southampton Press in New York seeks a reporter. The job listing states, "One of the nation's best weekly community newspaper groups is seeking bright, enthusiastic, energetic reporters to do it all: beat coverage, breaking news, enterprise stories, features. We need jacks- and jills-of-all-trades--intrepid reporters, government watchdogs, dazzling wordsmiths and solid photographers all rolled into one. When our reporters leave us, they do so with impressive clips and improved skills: we've had our best go on to the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Baltimore Sun, New York Post, etc."
4. The Sauk Valley News in Illinois seeks a reporter. The job listing states, "You're out of school looking for your first job. Or maybe you've found that first job, but toiling away on the night cops desk at a suburban weekly is not what you thought it would be. You're dedicated, you're energetic and you know you could be writing solid stories with context that give readers the tools to make a difference in their lives. You could be that reporter, if only you were given a shot."
5. The Star Tribune in Minnesota seeks a political reporter. The job listing states, "This position requires collegiality and collaboration with other members of the Capitol Bureau in St. Paul and the Washington Bureau to ensure the Star Tribune’s coverage of politics and government is second to none both in print and online. This reporter needs to be wired to the daily news and also be executing strong enterprise that captures major twists and turns in the state’s political life. This position requires thorough reporting that captures the views of both officials and citizens, and lively writing skills."
